Square Footage Calculator
Calculate area from length and width in feet.
Result
Simple rectangular area
Multiply length by width. Break irregular spaces into rectangles and add the areas together.
How it works
Square footage is the area of a flat space. For a rectangle, multiply the length by the width, both measured in feet. Divide by 9 to get square yards, since one square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet.
Worked example
Example: A bedroom is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide.
Area: 12 times 10 is 120 square feet.
Square yards: 120 divided by 9 is about 13.33 square yards.
If you are buying flooring, add about 10 percent extra for cuts and waste: 132 square feet.
Common questions
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, find each area, and add them together.
How do I convert inches to feet first?
Divide inches by 12. A wall that is 150 inches long is 12.5 feet.
Does this work for walls?
Yes. Use the wall height as the width. Subtract doors and windows if you are buying paint.
