How to use the character counter
Paste or type any text into the box above. The totals update for characters, characters without spaces, words, and lines. Character counts are useful when a website, form, social post, headline, title, or short description has a fixed length limit.
Characters includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. Without spaces removes whitespace before counting. The word total splits text at whitespace, while the line total counts each separate line in the text box.
For example, if a form allows 150 characters, use the first result to check the exact text you plan to submit. Nothing is uploaded by this tool; the count runs in your browser.
Character counter questions
Does the count include spaces?
Yes. The main character total includes spaces. A separate result shows the count with whitespace removed.
Can I use this for social media or form limits?
Yes. Paste the exact text you plan to use and compare the character total with the platform or form limit.
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, in most limits. The first result counts spaces; the second leaves them out.
What are common character limits?
Posts on X: 280. A single text message: 160. A search result description: about 155 to 160.
Do emoji count as one character?
Some emoji count as two or more in this counter, the same way many apps count them.
Worked example
Example: The text "Hello world" has 11 characters with the space and 10 without it. It is 2 words on 1 line.
That fits easily in a 280-character social post or a 160-character text message.
